Feminism, harmony, glitter and good times.
Deep C Divas are a five-voice lesbian a cappella group based in West Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Manchester and Kirkudbright. Since 1999, we’ve been singing songs of hope and struggle, humour and defiance, and the joys and complexities of women’s lives and loves.
We believe that strong feminist principles sit perfectly alongside sequins, sparkle and a good night out. Our repertoire mixes folk, pop, protest and parody, bringing together music that makes people laugh, think, sing along and occasionally shed a tear. Because while a lot has changed over the last 27 years, we still believe that a love song sung by women for women is a political act.
From village halls to international festivals, Pride stages to concert halls, we’ve been sharing our music across the UK and beyond for more than two decades. Along the way we’ve built friendships, found community and had the privilege of singing with some incredible queer choirs and performers from around the world.
Our story began in 1999 when a few of us returned from the Amsterdam Gay Games feeling inspired, energised and perhaps a little overexcited. Three years later we found ourselves singing at the Sydney Opera House and performing at the Sydney Gay Games. Since then we’ve appeared at festivals, community events and celebrations large and small, and have collaborated with wonderful groups including the European Queer Choir, Queer Essence from Ukraine, London Gay Men’s Chorus, The Sunday Boys, Gay Abandon, Die Wiebrations and many others.
Twenty-seven years on, we’re still singing, still laughing, still campaigning, and still proving that harmony can be both joyful and powerful.
